Chapter Fourteen

“You contact the nursing home, I’ll call the detectives for more info,” Jackson said, heading to his desk. Cheryl googled the nursing home’s contact information for me.

“I’m guessing this was exciting news?” Moreira asked.

“You could say so.” It didn’t make Amanda our thief, but she was the only connection between the retirement homes and the pawn broker that we had.

“Well, I’m glad if I could help,” he said. “I’ll leave you to it, and we’ll see later today.” He left to a chorus of sighs. Bad boys were so irresistible.

River Haven Retirement and Nursing Home was on Lawrence Avenue in Kensington, right opposite the 70th Precinct—not a location I would’ve thought Moreira would choose, but he probably hadn’t had a say in it. The neighborhood had no river and it was hardly a haven, but the building was fairly new. The website promised cozy apartments for active residents and dignified care for those who could no longer look after themselves, with a smooth transition from former to latter.

Since the place was by Trevor’s precinct, I called him first. “Do you know who’s investigating the thefts at the River Haven Retirement and Nursing Home?”

“The place opposite us? No, but I can find out. Why?”

“It might be connected with our case.”

“What do you need specifically?”

I liked how he didn’t waste time in denying me access to important information. “The list of people who work there, no matter in what capacity.”

“I’ll email it to you once I have it.” Then he paused and cleared his throat. “Your date went well?”

“Yes. Very well. You don’t need to shoot Shane.”

I could practically feel him grin. “Good to know.”

I called the nursing home next. It was a brief call and got me to rush to Jackson’s office. “Grab your coat. We’re headed to the nursing home.”

“Why?” he asked, already scooting back in his chair.

“The thief struck there again last night. And we know Amanda was on duty. We’ll have a look ourselves.”

Rhonda halted us as we dashed through the waiting area. “I almost forgot: my spirit guide visited me last night and the message was for you.”

“Oh?” I didn’t really believe in her spirit guide, but it wouldn’t hurt to listen.

“Pendant is a key,” she said with great solemnity.

I tensed. “That’s it? Nothing more?”

“No. Does it mean anything to you?”

“It could. Thanks.” And I rushed out.

“You don’t really believe in her spirit guide?” Jackson asked as we headed down the stairs. The building had a perfectly good elevator too, but we were only on the second floor, and Jackson believed in the physical benefits of not using it.

“I might. What are the chances that Rhonda would know about the pendant if it weren’t for her spirit guide?” I frowned. “I wonder what it means. The pendant didn’t look like a key. It wouldn’t even open.”

“It’s nonsense, that’s what it means.”

But I wasn’t discouraged and just kept going through all the possible scenarios. “Maybe it fits a slot in a wall or door that triggers some kind of a mechanism,” I mused when we were in the car and on our way.
